One Step to Weight Loss: My First Step
What really got the ball rolling for me? Why did I really decide to lose weight? What could cause an obese man to finally lose weight? Great questions that I hope to answer now…
I was 5′ 7″, 200 lbs, and ate out a lot. I didn’t exercise but I sure did lounge around a lot. My day simply consisted of:
- work
- tv
- being online
- hanging out with my girlfriend
- sleep
- and eating out a lot: Rubio’s, Sushi Hut, Domino’s, Subway, Jamb Juice, McDonald’s, Jack in the Box, Lolita’s, a lot of frozen foods and the list goes on…
My story really begins with college though, way back in 2003. Stress, late nights, and all you can eat buffets for lunch and dinner, with dessert *drool*. Who wouldn’t gain some weight in that environment for four years?
I could have limited myself but look at all that food that was to be eaten. When I graduated college in 2007, I was somewhere between 180-190 lbs. Not much until you take into account that I entered college at about 155lbs :/
I didn’t care much about my health and I wasn’t even aware about how much I weighed at the time. I knew the number but it didn’t hold any meaning to me.
Back then, my weight was just one of those things I paid little attention to. After a few years I looked back at some pictures and thought: OH MY GOD, I can’t believe I was that big. When did this happen?
I always thought of myself as still weighing my pre-college 155 lbs. You would think that someone would let me know how big I was.
Not even my girlfriend at the time really took notice since we gained weight together :/ We were one heavy couple, eating out, and eating often…
What were some good excuses for me to lose weight:

Anyways, all of these would be great reasons but none of them were it for me. I was happy with my life at the time and nothing really needed to change, so I thought…
Nothing Better Than a Life Crisis…
I went through a major life change when my girlfriend and I mutually decided to go our separate ways.
The break up gave me time to think. Luckily, I didn’t go in a downward spiral (well, not completely). I believe in thinking positively as much as possible. I took inventory of myself and my life goals.
I knew I let myself go and I used to love to exercise many years ago. My ex even mentioned that even with my size I was never the one that would need breaks when we went to places like Six Flags or other big amusement parks.
I was the big guy who would keep going and going…
Plus, a friend said I needed to lose weight in order to show my availability
…. It was just jokingly but a good reason to find the fasted way to lose stomach fat.
Anyways, I started my first step to weight loss by deciding it was time to improve my life, my health…
This first started by simply doing a few push-ups and sit-ups before going to work (about 20 each and increasing over time)… that was it for a long while!!! That was the start of me getting rid of the love handles.
Deciding I needed to improve my life and then starting a few simple exercises before work. Small steps now that made a huge difference in the long run. Like they say, you climb Mt. Everest one step at a time.
There was no magical weight loss routine. No magical fat burning food. Just deciding to do a few exercises before work is all that it took at the beginning.
During this same time I also stopped eating out as much since it’s fairly easy to cook something at home when you’re preparing your own meals. No more double cheeseburgers, greasy Mexican food, or other fast food. Instead, simple foods that can be made at home easily.
So that was my first step. Nothing extraordinary or difficult. Just somewhere to start. Of course more followed, but I’ll post more about My Story later…
Til next time. Look into yourself and decide what will be your first step?
P.S. take home message: My one step to weight loss started with just deciding to improve my health. As a result I continued my decision by doing a few push-ups and sit-ups before work. Increasing how many I do over time and starting to prepare my own meals soon followed.
